The Herbst

The Herbst offers an innovative solution for treating snoring and Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA). This review explores the various material options available for this effective appliance.

Hard Acrylic - Polymethyl Methacrylate (PMMA)

The Hard Orthodontic Splint Resin (PMMA) is a versatile choice suitable for all patients. It is especially recommended for those with limited natural posterior undercuts, multiple edentulous spaces, or significantly tipped or rotated teeth. Patients needing future restorations can benefit from its modifiability after initial fabrication. The Hard Acrylic appliance can incorporate retentive Ball Clasps, making retention adjustments easy, ideal for patients with limited natural posterior undercuts.

Dual-Laminate - Hard-Soft Material

The Dual-Laminate material boasts a hard copolyester outer layer and a soft polyurethane inner layer, providing exceptional comfort. Patients with sufficient natural buccal and lingual undercuts (at least 8 teeth per arch) can benefit from this BPA-free option. Precision is essential during fabrication, as the soft inner layer cannot be adjusted for retention modifications.

SlimLine - Resilient BPA Free Material

The SlimLine utilizes 3mm hard copolyester pressure molded material, providing exceptional resilience and being BPA-free. Patients with good natural buccal and lingual undercuts are suitable for this option. Due to its thinness, careful chairside adjustments are vital, necessitating accurate working models. Minor retention issues can be addressed by relining the appliance with standard orthodontic acrylic.
